Praying with the Pope: Caring for the Mental Health of Farm Workers

As the Church prays this November for those struggling with mental health, Daniel Mascarenhas, SJ draws attention to an often unseen group: slaughterhouse workers. In this reflection, he links compassion for animals with care for the human souls bearing the trauma of the meat industry.

Stewards of Pain

By Jim Manney

“No pain, no gain.” We’ve heard it a thousand times. It’s a spiritual truism: You find God in pain and suffering. You find God when you learn how much you need him. Pain, failure, and suffering are your friends and teachers. Don’t run from pain; face it, and find God in it. Leonard Cohen’s lyric […]

Apple Picking and Discernment

By Marina Berzins McCoy

Each year my family and I enjoy going apple picking together here in New England. Yes, I know that I could just as easily buy these apples at the local orchard, and no, I don’t always know what to do with all the apples that we bring home once I’ve made apple crisp, my husband […]

In response to the Jubilee Year’s call to be pilgrims of hope, the Office of Ignatian Spirituality is asking spiritual directors, “What is your hope for spiritual direction?” Joseph A. Tetlow, SJ, hopes people in spiritual direction “will discover their own call from God.” He says, “What I should feel first of all is joy. […]

Join us for the Moodle Academy webinar "Using AI to boost and speed up Moodle Plugin Translations" on Wednesday 29th October, 09:00am UTC

by Richard Lefroy.

Plugin Translator by Brickfield is designed to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist plugin translators when they are preparing language strings for Moodle plugins and Moodle Core! Simple!

This will save time for many organisations and plugin developers, in tasks such as:

  • Developing and managing multiple translations across a range of Moodle plugins.
  • Site administrators needing some additional translations for their active plugins.
  • Moodle Partners translating their local plugins for their clients.
  • Moodle Partners completing the core translation in areas with low core translation percentage.

This webinar, presented by Gavin Henrick, will demonstrate how it works and how you can use the freely available plugin to complete needed localisation of Moodle Core or Community Plugins.

This webinar is part of the course 'Moodle Academy webinars'. You have to be enrolled in this free course to register and join the webinar.

The Man Who Untangles Seagulls

By Eric Clayton

I sit with a Jesuit friend on a pier near a fishing village overlooking the Irish Sea. The village, Howth, is a 30-minute or so drive northeast of Dublin. It’s a lovely night: cool and breezy, with the smell of salt and seaweed wafting over the ocean wall. It’s busy too. Along the pier are […]

Something Good

2 months 2 weeks ago

By dotMagis Editor

I once worked with a teacher who started every class by inviting each pupil to say something good. Students were challenged to tell a story or name a miracle. This practice formed the students: They got in the habit of noticing what was good in their lives. Before long, they could notice and name how […]

Sneezing and Being Beautifully Human

2 months 2 weeks ago

By Gretchen Crowder

Ah…ah…achoo! “Oh, no, oh, no, oh, no!” I thought frantically. “I cannot be sick, Lord. Not now!” To be fair, it was only one tiny little sneeze. I knew I should not be jumping to conclusions, but jump to conclusions I did. “God, I have a big week coming up. There is no way I […]

Announcing Moodle LMS 5.1: Levelling up educator experience, with better course tools, clearer Ai controls, and simpler admin

2 months 2 weeks ago
by Matt Porritt.

Hi Everyone,

We’re pleased to announce the release of Moodle LMS 5.1, packed with updates that simplify course building, give teachers more control over AI at the course level, and reduce admin complexity. This release builds on the momentum of 5.0, with improvements designed to save time, reduce clutter, and make Moodle LMS easier to use every day.

Behind every new feature, improvement and fix are the efforts of our amazing Moodle community, our partners, and the Moodle LMS team. We deeply appreciate everyone who helped bring Moodle LMS 5.1 to life.

Here’s what’s new in Moodle LMS 5.1:

🧭 An expanded Activities overview page
The Activities overview page now works across all major activity types, showing teachers what needs grading or follow-up and giving learners a clear view of upcoming tasks and completed work.
Why this matters: One organised view of all course activities helps teachers take action and learners stay on track.

🛠️ A redesigned Activity chooser
The Activity chooser has had a makeover! Activities are now grouped on separate tabs by teaching purpose - assessment, collaboration, communication, resources, and interactive content - with related tools suggested for each
Why this matters: Teachers can build with their learning goals in mind, choosing tools based on purpose - and admins can customise the Activity chooser to fit their institution’s unique course-building needs.

🧠 More options and control over AI
Teachers can now easily switch AI on or off at the course level and configure AI settings per activity - no more wading through permissions pages! Meanwhile, with new support for DeepSeek, admins can choose from a broader range of AI providers.
Why this matters: Educators gain real flexibility to decide where AI tools add value in their courses, while institutions retain control over which providers best fit their policies and needs.

In addition to these new features, Moodle LMS 5.1 includes a range of improvements that make everyday teaching and site administration easier:

  • Better course creation tools: Richer media handling in TinyMCE and clearer course settings.
  • Course enrolment & management: Options to set enrolment start dates, choose groups, and track assignment feedback downloads.
  • Platform simplification: Retirement of older blocks and settings for a cleaner interface.
  • Security: CAPTCHA added to password recovery page.

Moodle LMS 5.1 also includes many more updates across course creation, enrolment, and administration - each designed to save time and simplify daily workflows. You can explore the New features documentation for a full overview.

A special note around upgrading your instances for this release: As part of our continuing efforts to modernize and update the architecture of Moodle LMS, we’ve made a change to the code structure that will require you to reconfigure your web servers as part of the upgrade process. Please read this linked documentation prior to upgrading.

Thank you for being a valued members of our Moodle community!

Warm regards,
Matt Porritt

Resisting Grace

2 months 2 weeks ago

By Vinita Hampton Wright

Here’s a helpful question to ask from time to time: Am I resisting God’s grace? Now, why would anyone do that? Resist the grace received through Jesus? Consider the following. We don’t think we deserve it. Especially for those of us who live in cultures that are highly individualistic, we are conditioned to believe that […]

Four Ways to Fight Perfectionism in the Spiritual Life

Hearing the familiar crackle of my knees as I crouched down to scrub my shower, I recalled the days when I used to be able to clean my whole house from top to bottom in a day. Though weary, I would stand at the end of the day relishing the dust-free shine and scent of […]
